SME Development
Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are considered engines of growth because they generate jobs and are flexible and contribute significantly to economic productivity. SME development generally refers to facilitating progress in these entities by enhancing business development services, improving financing, and establishing a conducive legal, regulatory, and policy environment.
AECOM International Development works with SMEs to help them become compliant with international standards, such as good manufacturing practices, HACCP standards to address food safety, and worldwide responsible apparel production (WRAP) standards, and to obtain certifications, such as Kosher and to comply with sanitary and phyto-sanitary requirements so they can export. We work in the financial sector to bring financial services at reduced cost to small producers who have not previously had access. We work with governments to develop tax policies with appropriate rates to encourage investment and productive enterprises. We work on arbitration systems to facilitate labor disputes. We develop policies for improving productive and competitive capacities of SMEs, encourage the development of organizations to sustainably provide services for small enterprises, and promote competitive markets for providing communications logistics, energy, and transport efficiently and affordably.
